What are brain waves?
Brain waves are electrical signals produced by cells in the brain called neurons. Certain brain waves increase depending on what a person is doing.
-
Delta brain waves are the slowest of all your brain waves and usually increase when a person is fast asleep.
-
Theta brain waves are produced when someone has their eyes closed and they aren't really asleep but they aren't totally awake either.
-
Alpha brain waves are produced when someone is in a state of relaxation or is daydreaming.
-
Beta waves are fast brain waves and are produced when a person is actively engaged in a mental activity.
-
Brain waves should be faster at front, slower at back, faster at left and slower at right. For example, someone with “backwards brain” (slow at front/left, fast at back/right), tends to be depressed and anxious.
If you feel you are a candidate for neurofeedback, call a neurotherapist and tell them what you are experiencing. If they feel that neurofeedback will work for you, they will set up an assessment. The neurotherapist will examine the assessment and identify the brain waves that are disregulated and in need of retraining. After discussing these findings with the client, they will design a plan to train the disregulated waves through an auditory reward system.
