Is Neurofeedback painful?
Neurofeedback is entirely non-invasive. It is painless, and does not involve the application of any voltage or electric current to the brain. Sensors are placed on the scalp with an EEG paste (washes out with warm water) that picks up brain waves, similar to the way an EKG lead reads your heartbeat. The sensors read and record brain waves, transmitting them to an amplifier so that they can then be seen and processed with our computer software.

Are the effects of Neurofeedback permanent?
The greatest benefit of neurofeedback is that once you have completed the training the effects are permanent. Once the brain has been regulated there are very few instances that can reverse the positive changes of training. Severe trauma to the head (e.g., a car accident, etc.) or severe emotional trauma can sometimes hinder the effects of the training. The trauma usually does not reverse all the training and in many cases coming in for a few sessions may be all that is necessary.

What about medication?
Another benefit about neurofeedback is that most people who come in on medications relating to ADHD, Depression, Anxiety, Sleep disorders and other neurologic disorders either reduce or discontinue their medications entirely. The neurotherapist advises clients to consult with their medical practitioners for assistance making adjustments to these medications as their neurofeedback training progresses. It is the responsibility of the client to discuss this with their primary care physician or specialist.

Can Neurofeedback address cluster symptoms?
Cluster symptoms accompany many disorders. Lack of sleep can accompany diagnoses such as ADHD or even anxiety. Angry outbursts can accompany depression. Behavioral problems can occur in children diagnosed with Aspberger's. Poor social skills can be classified as cluster symptoms as well. When the brain begins to regulate through neurofeedback training these cluster symptoms often subside.

Is there science behind Neurofeedback?
Research dates back to 1929 when German psychiatrist Hans Berger started studying EEG's. Dr. Barry (Maurice) Sterman was the first to discover usefulness for people who suffer from seizure disorders in the 1950's. This opened the door to many scientific studies and research articles. Many of these can be viewed on www.isnr.org in the section labeled Comprehensive Neurofeedback Bibliography.

Does insurance cover neurofeedback?
Neurofeedback trains your brain and is not used to treat, or diagnose any disorder or illness, therefore it is not covered by most insurance companies. People have been known to get reimbursement through a special section of their health coverage that covers alternative therapies such as acupuncture and massage. Unlike many other modalities, neurofeedback is a permanent change and must be viewed for the long term benefits it provides. Taking into consideration that this is not considered within the medical scope of treatments, neurofeedback is therefore reasonably priced.
